Volvo: To achieve carbon neutrality by 2040

Volvo: "I have set a small goal to become a global climate zero load benchmark enterprise by 2040. Today I have taken the first step towards success."

All grand plans begin with a firm first step. In 2019, Volvo released "Volvo Cars' 2040 ambitions", a luxury car brand from Northern Europe committed to developing the company into a global climate zero-load benchmark enterprise by 2040. The time comes to 2020. At the Volvo Asia-Pacific Core Supplier Sustainability Forum and Technology Exhibition, which opened on July 21, Volvo joined 17 global leading suppliers to showcase its innovative technologies and products in sustainability. From this, we can see how Volvo took the first step of this grand plan.

The energy-saving and emission-reduction of automobile enterprises needs to involve many aspects from the manufacture of vehicles to the energy consumption of automobile products. This is not only reflected in the simple low fuel consumption or the development of pure electric vehicles. On the other hand, as an automobile industry with a huge industrial chain, every link plays a vital role in the development of auto companies. Therefore, to achieve "zero global climate load", the strength of the auto companies themselves is far from enough.

Yuan Xiaolin, Senior Vice President of Volvo Group, President and CEO of Volvo Asia Pacific, said: "Since Volvo, as the first automobile company to publish an environmental declaration at the United Nations Environment Conference in 1972, environmental protection and sustainable development have always been the long-term development of our company. The cornerstone of the company. A responsible and sustainable supply chain system is essential for us to achieve Volvo Cars' 2040 ambitions. We will work with all our supplier partners to take practical actions to reduce the environmental impact of cars and business operations."

As the first step of "Volvo Cars' 2040 ambitions", Volvo's Chengdu plant has achieved 100% renewable electricity operation starting in 2020. This is also the first domestic automobile plant to achieve zero carbon emissions from electricity. According to reports, the entire production and operation of Volvo's Chengdu plant comes from renewable energy sources, including 65% hydropower and 35% wind power.

Previously, the carbon dioxide emissions of Volvo's Chengdu plant was approximately 11,000 tons per year. Thanks to its 100% renewable electricity operation, its electricity carbon dioxide emissions have been "cleared", making it the first domestic automobile manufacturing base to achieve carbon neutrality with electricity.

In terms of new energy vehicles, Volvo will launch its first pure electric vehicle in the second half of 2020-XC40 Recharge P8. Compared with traditional fuel vehicles, pure electric vehicles can achieve 100% zero emissions during use. With the upcoming launch of the first pure electric model, Volvo has taken a step closer to the goal of "50% of global annual sales in 2025 will be pure electric models".

In the manufacturing process, Volvo has invested in the blockchain technology company Circulor through its technology fund to promote the traceability of Volvo's electric vehicle power battery raw materials. Take Volvo XC40 Recharge P8 as an example. The power battery loaded on it uses blockchain technology to realize the global traceability of cobalt in the power battery.

In addition, Volvo and CATL and its subsidiary battery recycling company Bangpu have also made further discussions on the application of recycled cobalt. In the future, Volvo will recycle cobalt materials in regenerated scrap batteries and re-apply the recycled cobalt materials to more XC40 vehicles through regeneration technology to further reduce the environmental impact of waste power batteries and increase the utilization rate of raw materials.

Also as an important part of the "Volvo Cars' 2040 ambitions" strategy, Volvo plans to reduce the carbon emissions of its overall operations (including manufacturing and logistics) by 25% by 2025. To achieve this goal, Volvo and many partners are also carrying out a series of technological innovations and in-depth cooperation.

According to the plan, Volvo will reduce the carbon emissions of each vehicle's life cycle by 40% from 2018 to 2025. By 2025, the carbon dioxide emissions related to the global supply chain will be reduced by 25%, which will be used in all new Volvo models. At least 25% of the plastics will come from renewable raw materials.

In terms of emission reduction of fuel vehicles, Volvo’s XC90, XC60, S90, S60 and other major models have successively launched plug-in hybrid versions. At the same time, Volvo also plans to gradually promote the 48V light hybrid system in traditional fuel vehicles.

As of 2019, thanks to the strong performance of major markets around the world, especially the record sales performance in many single markets, Volvo has achieved six consecutive years of sales growth. From the perspective of continuous improvement in market performance, the brand concept of "safety is luxury, health is luxury, and environmental protection is luxury" advocated by Volvo is gaining recognition and favor from more and more users.

As Volvo and partners work together to achieve the steady progress of "Volvo Cars' 2040 ambitions" and more sustainable innovative technology applications, we also look forward to Volvo's future launch of more personalized, sustainable, and safe products and travel service plan, and ultimately achieve the global climate zero load goal.
