BMW X2, 3rd Made-in-China SUV, is to be built in Shenyang

January 16, the BMW Group's three large luxury cars made their debut in China, marked the beginning of 2019 product unveiling. The BMW brand will launch a total of 21 new products this year. BMW Board of Management Member Dr. Nicolas Peter said in an interview with IIA: "The innovative BMW X2 will be settled in Shenyang plant and become our third Chinese SUV." The new BMW X2 imported model was officially launched in China on June 25, 2018. The new car is based on the UKL platform and the design represents the latest direction in the X family design. In the future, the Chinese BMW X2 will compete with the Mercedes-Benz GLA and other models in the same market segment.

Previously, IIA learned from the Shenyang Association of Environmental Protection Industry that BMW Brilliance established the Tiexi Plant Product Structure (G2x, F39) adjustment technology transformation project with a total investment of 2.3 billion yuan. The project utilized the existing foundation of the BMW Brilliance Tiexi Plant to adjust the product structure. In the case of maintaining the existing annual capacity of 400,000 units, 235,000 units will be the G2x (BMW new three-series models) and the F39 (BMW X2 models).

The appearance of the BMW X2 is highly restored to the X2 Concept released at the 2016 Paris Motor Show, and it equipped with the M off-road kit. The kidney grille has an inverted trapezoidal structure with a narrow upper and a lower width. High-gloss black grille and chrome trim form a sharp contrast. Both the low beam and the high beam are LED lights, mating with hexagonal LED daytime running lights and round LED fog lights to form the lighting system of the new car.

BMW X2

The new BMW X2 has a drag coefficient of only 0.28. There are two typical BMW designs on the C-pillar. One is the iconic Hofmeister corner, and the other is the first appearance of the BMW logo on the C-pillar on BMW X, a tribute to the BMW 2000CS and the BMW 3.0CSL. The rear bumper of the basic model is painted with the same color with the car body and mated with matt black. The M off-road set adopts the custom diffuser inserts with matte gray color. The diameter of the exhaust tail is 90mm, the same as that of the X6 M.

The cabin of the BMW X2 adopts a driver-centric design concept. The 6.5-inch center console display can be upgraded to 8.8 inches. The dashboard features contrast stitching and line design, while the center console is covered with Secsatec leather. The interior of the M off-road set features a combination of Micro Hexagon fabric and Alcantara Anthracite. The new car has a capacity of 470 liters of trunk, and it can be expanded to 1355 liters when rear seats are folded.

The new BMW X2 is powered by the B48 series 2.0T turbocharged engine with a maximum power of 141kW and a peak torque of 280Nm. The engine is matched with a new 7-speed DCT. The new car has three driving modes, COMFORT, ECO PRO and SPORT. The suspension system is a front McPherson independent suspension and a rear multi-link independent suspension.
